Deep PM - Dave Manley http://eclecticreviews.com/Dave_Manley-Deep_PM-review.html I gave this 5 stars because I'm biased; to me it really is that good. I've met Dave and have seen him perform several times. As a fellow guitarist I find him incredibly inspiring. We've seen him perform at the High Street Cafe in West Chester, PA... Pontypool http://eclecticreviews.com/Pontypool-movie-review.html IMDB describes this film as "A psychological thriller in which a deadly virus infects a small Ontario town." That's good if you need to describe the film in 13 words or less, but such a description misses the mark... The Last Exorcism http://eclecticreviews.com/The_Last_Exorcism-movie-review.html Reverend Cotton Marcus is an admitted charlatan, a fraud, deceiving believers because he claims it helps them. He fakes his exorcisms too. But this time the joke might be on him... I passed this one by so many times on Netflix because I was afraid it would be just another cheesy Exorcist knock-off... Dropping Fear - Mike Catalano http://eclecticreviews.com/Mike_Catalano-Dropping_Fear-review.html Dropping Fear is at once a unique yet familiar horror tale. The idea is quite different than any story I've ever read, but elements of the plot rekindle fond memories of horror films I watched as a teen in the 80s... Frozen http://eclecticreviews.com/Frozen-movie-review.html Frozen is more a psychological study than a horror film, though the scenario is undeniably horrific, as is the eventual outcome. Effective character development connects us with the protagonists as we follow them through events leading up to their isolation, dangling some 30 or 40 feet in the air on a rickety ski lift... The Pumpkin Karver http://eclecticreviews.com/The_Pumpkin_Karver-movie-review.html I could see this film gaining a small cult following based on some of the antics it contains. For example, when the funny character dressed as the Incredible Hulk helps out with a wheel barrow full of pumpkins he does a quick flex, "and... Club Dread http://eclecticreviews.com/Club_Dread-movie-review.html I wanted to give this one a try after seeing Super Troopers, another Broken Lizard film. While Club Dread falls short compared to the comical impact of Super Troopers, it does have some hidden gems and may appeal to most Broken Lizard fans... Elephants on Acid - Alex Boese http://eclecticreviews.com/Alex_Boese-Elephants_on_Acid-review.html This is an interesting read to say the least. If you've ever wondered how far some fringe scientists have gone in the past this is the book to start with. Let me just say, you really won't believe some of the stuff you'll read here, but according to the author, Alex Boese, a graduate of Amherst College with a Master's Degree in the History of Science from the University of California, San Diego, it's all true... Hellbilly Deluxe 2 - Rob Zombie http://eclecticreviews.com/Rob_Zombie-Hellbilly_Deluxe_2-review.html I was going to write a lengthy review of this CD and compare it to his other work but, you know what? I changed my mind. I just deleted a whole paragraph of nonsense just to leave you with some simple thoughts: It's Rob Zombie, he does his thing, and any real fan is glad that he does it... The Watcher http://eclecticreviews.com/The_Watcher-movie-review.html Some parts of the film were great, other parts not so great, and the acting was bland for the most part. Keanu Reeves is the most bland and boring of all. James Spader does a decent job, with what he has to work with... Transporter 2 http://eclecticreviews.com/Transporter_2-movie-review.html I'm not going to tell you what the plot line is because I think a review should review the movie positive and negative points without revealing what actually transpires. Movies should be enjoyed without the viewer knowing what's going to happen next... Let The Right One In http://eclecticreviews.com/Let_The_Right_One_In-movie-review.html There was an issue with the original DVD release regarding subtitles, judging by all of the one star reviews on Amazon about it. But I can't comment on that, as I did not watch the original theatrical version of this film... Dark Fields http://eclecticreviews.com/Dark_Fields-movie-review.html A group of teens on their way to a rock concert run out of gas in the boondocks, near an old farm. Leaving his friends back at the car, Drew the driver appraoches the farmhouse to get some help, but finds no one home... Trailer Park of Terror http://eclecticreviews.com/Trailer_Park_of_Terror-movie-review.html If I'd known that Trailer Park of Terror was based on a comic book series by Imperium Comics, I would have viewed it a bit differently from the beginning. I will, however, preface this review by saying that this is a very well made film with top notch blood-spurting, makeup and digital effects, great cinematography, and excellent sound production... Everyday Noize - Roger Kahn http://eclecticreviews.com/Roger_Kahn-Everyday_Noize-review.html As a music producer and podcaster with a budget minded approach to digital home recording I've been looking for a collection of sound effects that don't cost an arm and a leg. Yes, there are some outstanding sound effect collections available, but seriously, I can't spend $99 or $199 on sounds... Disturbia http://eclecticreviews.com/Disturbia-movie-review.html Disturbia started working right from the beginning. The most emotionally intense moments occurred during the opening sequence, but the remainder was still a very engaging film. A nice balance of humor, drama and thrills... Haunted Lakes - Frederick Stonehouse http://eclecticreviews.com/Frederick_Stonehouse-Haunted_Lakes-review.html Finally! A Collection of great ghost tales, legends and lore presented as ghost tales, legends and lore! Frederick Stonehouse does not get cute and spooky! In Haunted Lakes and Haunted Lakes 2, Stonehouse presents these mysterious tales as a matter of history... Halloween http://eclecticreviews.com/Halloween-movie-review.html Zombie promised the new Halloween movie would be fresh, and different from the host of other Halloween films, and loaded with gore. He commented about wanting to "bring back the scare factor." He did just that... The Astronaut Farmer http://eclecticreviews.com/The_Astronaut_Farmer-movie-review.html If we don't have our dreams, we have nothing. Bravo! This movie was excellent. I wasn't sure what to expect at first but it was a wonderful film with a great message, "Don't give up on your dreams... Skinwalkers http://eclecticreviews.com/Skinwalkers-movie-review.html Alas, another tale of werewolves, but this time the lycanthropic beasties ride in on motorcycles, slingin' lead a la Underworld, instead of just relying on their superhuman strength and razor sharp claws... Stranger Than Fiction http://eclecticreviews.com/Stranger_Than_Fiction-movie-review.html Will Ferrell did a great job in this outstanding story of a story in progress, wherein the main character realizes he is the main character, and with the help of Dustin Hoffman attempts to find out who the author is... Bloodsucking Freaks http://eclecticreviews.com/Bloodsucking_Freaks-movie-review.html Blood Sucking Freaks is a sadistic 1970s horror/exploitation film and comedy with plenty of naked ladies. It has to be a comedy, there's no way the creator's were serious. The film was originally titled Sardu: Master of the Screaming Virgins, and ran in theaters as The Incredible Torture Show... Talladega Nights - The Ballad of Ricky Bobby http://eclecticreviews.com/Talladega_Nights_-_The_Ballad_of_Ricky_Bobby-movie-review.html I heard that Talladega Nights was hillarious. It had it's moments, but I wouldn't consider it hillarious. If you aren't much of a Will Ferrell fan then you will probably agree. Don't get me wrong, there are tons of comical moments in this film, but some of the bits are overdone, and since they weren't that great to begin with they become annoying the longer they are carried out... Rob Zombie http://eclecticreviews.com/Rob_Zombie-review.html My girlfriend and I caught Rob Zombie and his band at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut last weekend (12/3), and it was an excellent show. Totally rocked. We walked down to the floor area, and while security wouldn't let us onto the floor we did manage to hang out down at the bottom near a couple of vacant seats... The Extraordinary Story of Human Origins - Piero Angela http://eclecticreviews.com/Piero_Angela-The_Extraordinary_Story_of_Human_Origins-review.html It's been years since I've even pondered this stuff, but recently I've been delving back into science, and this book provides an eye-opening, easy to understand look at evolution. This is the truth, what science knows about our history... Blood Diamond http://eclecticreviews.com/Blood_Diamond-movie-review.html Djimon Hounsou, who has an impressive life story himself, offers an intense performance of Solomon Vandy, a man separated from his family when the RUF (Revolutionary United Front) invades his village in Sierra Leone, killing women and children, and taking many young boys captive to serve as RUF soldiers (which has actually happened... Saw III http://eclecticreviews.com/Saw_III-movie-review.html The first "Saw" was cool, and clever, but this one takes the cake. It doesn't matter that I haven't seen Saw II yet, they all stand on their own pretty well. Though I do plan on seeing the second one... Super Troopers http://eclecticreviews.com/Super_Troopers-movie-review.html My wife rented this on a recommendation from our local video store owner, it was a hit. We laughed the entire time. These guys are incredibly funny, but anyone looking for some higher humor may not appreciate it... Borat - Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan http://eclecticreviews.com/Borat_-_Cultural_Learnings_of_America_for_Make_Benefit_Glorious_Nation_of_Kazakhstan-movie-review.html Borat is funny movie for make benefit my collectings of DVD. Borat, one of the characters made famous by comic actor Sacha Baron Cohen on British television and then in the United States via HBO, is offensive and moronic, yet endearing and funny... Creature from Black Lake http://eclecticreviews.com/Creature_from_Black_Lake-movie-review.html Creature from Black Lake is a decent production, albeit on a low budget, but once played out the story is actually pretty good. Dennis Fimple is cast perfectly for his roll, and creates a likeable character as Pahoo; comical, yet somehow vulnerable, and we find out how well this actually works at setting us up for a shock later in the film... Backyard Bigfoot - Lisa A. Shiel http://eclecticreviews.com/Lisa_A._Shiel-Backyard_Bigfoot-review.html I was curious about the possibility of stick signs being real evidence of interaction with Bigfoot, but I was also curious to know if Lisa A. Shiel, author of Backyard Bigfoot, had a new, logical, perspective on Bigfoot and how the plausible existence of hairy forest giants might relate to UFOs, "orbs" and other paranormal mysteries... Sasquatch Hunters http://eclecticreviews.com/Sasquatch_Hunters-movie-review.html A group of researchers and forest rangers hike into the dense Pacific Northwest wilderness in search of bones of an unknown primate thought to inhabit the area in prehistoric times. They discover a burial ground and bones... Flowers Before Hours - New Sense http://eclecticreviews.com/New_Sense-Flowers_Before_Hours-review.html Hailing from MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin, New Sense produces fresh, yet familiar music, reminiscent of great bygone eras of eurobeats, 70's flower-power, a touch of techno, excellent grooves, and smooth, pure, wonderful vocals, and great production... Hunting the American Werewolf - Linda S. Godfrey http://eclecticreviews.com/Linda_S._Godfrey-Hunting_the_American_Werewolf-review.html LindaS. Godfrey succeeds in uncovering more sightings and tales of Wisconsin's beloved Beast of Bray Road, an apparent man-wolf, or wolves, which seem to have strayed from their original haunt in Walworth County... Underground Bases and Tunnels - Richard Sauder http://eclecticreviews.com/Richard_Sauder-Underground_Bases_and_Tunnels-review.html This book tops out at 130 written pages (excluding index and footnotes). Of those 130 pages, 50 consist entirely of schematics and photographs obtained from publicly accessible sources. That means Sauder wrote approximately 80 pages for this book... Dan Aykroyd Unplugged on UFOs http://eclecticreviews.com/Dan_Aykroyd_Unplugged_on_UFOs-movie-review.html I've been a Dan Aykroyd fan since the old Saturday Night Live days. There is no doubt he is an amazing natural talent when it comes to comedy, acting and performing music, but a "professor," of great intellect in discussing the UFO phenomenon? Sorry, I didn't buy it... Vapor Trails - Rush http://eclecticreviews.com/Rush-Vapor_Trails-review.html I must admit, when I first saw the cover art it wasn't at all what I had expected when I heard of the official CD title before it's release. I was envisioning more clean, blue sky art similar to Test for Echo, because when I think of Vapor Trails I picture white contrails in a clear blue sky... Dark Water http://eclecticreviews.com/Dark_Water-movie-review.html I'm a fan of spooky movies, and when I saw previews for Dark Water I thought I was in for a treat. Once I viewed it I was moderately dissapointed. It was just okay. Over the past two years there has been a boom of supernatural horror flicks making the box office circuit, plenty of direct to video titles (many of which shouldn't have even made it that far!), and even a resurgence in supernatural and paranormal television shows, like obviously "Supernatural," "Invasion," even an attempt to revive "The Night Stalker," one of my favorites as I was growing up... The Hitcher http://eclecticreviews.com/The_Hitcher-movie-review.html The Original "The Hitcher" with C. Thomas Howell, Rutger Hauer, man this is a classic! I loved this film when I first saw it back in 1986, and I recently purchased my own copy to add to my video library... Red Eye http://eclecticreviews.com/Red_Eye-movie-review.html If you haven't had the chance to see Red Eye I won't ruin it by sharing all the details, but as far as I'm concerned this is one cool flick, and one of the best I've seen from 2005. Rachel McAdams looks as good as ever and her performance is well done... Wedding Crashers http://eclecticreviews.com/Wedding_Crashers-movie-review.html I heard some compaints about this film not living up to expectations based on the trailer and commercial spots. I'd have to disagree. Though Wedding Crashers isn't the best comedy I've seen, it is original, and does hold its own in the laugh department... The Grudge http://eclecticreviews.com/The_Grudge-movie-review.html If it didn't sell in Japan why bother with it here? The story was hard to nail down, so I'm still not quite sure what the grudge was supposed to be. The story bounces around so much that the viewer is never really aware of who's who and what's going on... Twisted http://eclecticreviews.com/Twisted-movie-review.html The review on the cover of the DVD reads "A snappy, sexy thriller..." I must disagree. This was the most unsexy, and unthrilling movie I've seen in a long time. In my opinion Ashley Judd doses not fit this roll, it's almost comedic... The Village http://eclecticreviews.com/The_Village-movie-review.html Excellent idea, slow in the telling. This movie was one of the slowest moving films I've ever seen, and the slow pace ultimately brings the viewer to a surprise twist ending but by that point you're so glad the movie is over you could care less about the premise... Saw http://eclecticreviews.com/Saw-movie-review.html Didn't quite have me riveted to the screen, but there was a healthy dose of suspense and enough twists to keep the viewer interested. What loses me is the title and cover, which I thought conveyed a more demented body chopping scenario... Open Water http://eclecticreviews.com/Open_Water-movie-review.html Overall not the best film I've seen, and the ending was a bit unfulfilling, though I won't ruin it by telling you why. Also, it's based on a true story, so that in itself makes it worth watching. This is certainly not an award winning picture, but there have been worse... Ray http://eclecticreviews.com/Ray-movie-review.html Fox's performance is outstanding, and his convincing portrayal pulls the viewer into the story and gives them the feeling that they are watching actual footage of Ray Charles as his life story unfolds on the big screen... Collateral http://eclecticreviews.com/Collateral-movie-review.html Excellent! Can I say two thumbs up or did someone trademark that phrase? While the true origin of Cruise's character remains somewhat a mystery, it's balanced by the fact that we don't need much to convince us of his personality, or his goals... The Notebook http://eclecticreviews.com/The_Notebook-movie-review.html I read some reviews that paint The Notebook in a bad light, but I liked it. It was a touching film, well written, well acted and directed, and in my opinion the actors were perfectly cast for their parts... Troy http://eclecticreviews.com/Troy-movie-review.html Troy is a well told epic tale of the Trojan War, battles fought and loves lost. One reason I like this movie so much is the portrayal of the fabled warrior Achilles (Pitt). The presentation of his battle tactics is superb, and the realism of the battle scenes in general greatly benefit from a new age in CG special effects technology... Everything Must Go - Steely Dan http://eclecticreviews.com/Steely_Dan-Everything_Must_Go-review.html I wouldn't expect anything but cool. Wow, these guys have been around for a long, long time, and I'll never get tired of hearing their trademark grooves, tight drums and cool arrangements. Donald Fagan and Walter Becker have been turning out this stuff for over two decades, all I can say is I hope everything doesn't go - like... Waiting for my Rocket to Come - Jason Mraz http://eclecticreviews.com/Jason_Mraz-Waiting_for_my_Rocket_to_Come-review.html When I first heard "The Remedy (I won't worry)" on the radio I was hooked, I knew I had to hear more from this guy. I bought the CD as fast as I could and put it in the car, turned it up... God Shuffled His Feet - Crash Test Dummies http://eclecticreviews.com/Crash_Test_Dummies-God_Shuffled_His_Feet-review.html I took a short trip back a few years (a lot few), I was 25 and my favorite CD was God Shuffled His Feet, released in 1993 by The Crash Test Dummies. This was the second offering from the band, and the most successful follow-up to their 1991 debut release "The Ghosts that Haunt Me" which featured the hit Superman's Song... Everyday - Dave Matthews Band http://eclecticreviews.com/Dave_Matthews_Band-Everyday-review.html I must admit, I wasn't a fan of Dave Matthews band early on, when everyone else was raving about this act when they erupted in the early 90's. I may still not be a fan, as it were, but I do appreciate good music and that's what I found on their 2001 offering "Everyday"... Get Inside - Johnny A http://eclecticreviews.com/Johnny_A-Get_Inside-review.html Get inside, put your seatbelt on, and enjoy the ride. You'll cruise by quaint country scenes, race a train skirting rolling hills and rustic mountains. You'll make it all the way to Nashville via gritty city streets past all the coolest jazz and rock clubs... Shangri-La - Mark Knopfler http://eclecticreviews.com/Mark_Knopfler-Shangri-La-review.html A true compañero and more than worth los dinero, even if you have to rob a bank to get it! Mark Knopfler is at the top of his gig here. There's no shortage of great guitar work, and like his other solo releases, the story telling is top notch! Rock, blues, country, salsa, and more styles of music intertwine here than in any other album I've heard... Feedback - Rush http://eclecticreviews.com/Rush-Feedback-review.html I didn't know what to expect at first, but when I gave Feedback a listen I was not disappointed. It's interesting; this legendary power trio from Canada has earned a well deserved reputation as one of the most original progressive rock bands in the world and here they are doing covers... Monsters of the Northwoods - Paul Bartholomew http://eclecticreviews.com/Paul_Bartholomew-Monsters_of_the_Northwoods-review.html Bigfoot haunts the Adirondacks! They need to release this book on Kindle, I can't believe it's not in reprint. There are two reasons I am reviewing, and suggesting the Bigfoot book "Monsters of the Northwoods... Shaun of the Dead http://eclecticreviews.com/Shaun_of_the_Dead-movie-review.html Shaun of the Dead is NOT for the children! Prepare yourself for plent of foulness, but also prepare yourself for some great laughs. It took a little bit for Shaun of the Dead to get going, but once it did I was hooked! After the first twenty minutes of character building — during which we learn of Shaun's girl trouble, his lousy job, are introduced to Shaun's flatulent roommate, Ed, and assorted other necessary story details — I was pleasantly surprised by the originality of this film in light of it being a "zomie flick... White Noise http://eclecticreviews.com/White_Noise-movie-review.html Prepared to be SCARED! White Noise delivers the goods. I literally jumped out of my seat a few times while watching this movie. Michael Keaton does a decent job as the husband of a famous author who goes missing and is later found dead... National Treasure http://eclecticreviews.com/National_Treasure-movie-review.html This was a fun, exciting film. Nicholas Cage plays a member of a ridiculed family of conspiracy theorists, claiming he knows of clues left by the Free Masons that lead to a grand treasure of the Knights Templar... House of D http://eclecticreviews.com/House_of_D-movie-review.html While I was picking out films one night in the local video store I spotted David Duchovny and Robin Williams on the cover of this DVD and just had to grab it. Simply charming. David Duchovny did a great job directing and stars in this unexpected gem about a man's reconciliation with his past... Beast of Bray Road - Linda S. Godfrey http://eclecticreviews.com/Linda_S._Godfrey-Beast_of_Bray_Road-review.html When I first heard of the Beast of Bray Road, well before reading Linda S. Godfrey's Beast of Bray Road book, I wondered what the heck this thing, or things, could be that people were seeing around Walworth, Jefferson and Racine Counties in Wisconsin... Weird NJ - Mark Sceurman http://eclecticreviews.com/Mark_Sceurman-Weird_NJ-review.html Weird New Jersey, Your Travel Guide to New Jersey's Local Legends and Best Kept Secrets This hardcover "travel guide to New Jersey's local legends and best kept secrets" is a fun read... Intensity - Dean Koontz http://eclecticreviews.com/Dean_Koontz-Intensity-review.html Originally published in 1995, Dean Koontz's Intensity had me hooked, with an incredibly intriguing twist, right from the beginning. It's like I was sitting there just minding my own business and then BANG we're off like a shot, racing at breathless speeds, panicked, in fear, in terror right along side the lead character... Mysterious America: The Revised Edition - Loren Coleman http://eclecticreviews.com/Loren_Coleman-Mysterious_America:_The_Revised_Edition-review.html Mysterious America contains reviews and overviews of many sightings of mysterious, unexplainable creatures, and strange phenomena around the United States. It's a perfect resource for anyone interested in Forteana... Ghost Rider: Travels on the Healing Road - Neil Peart http://eclecticreviews.com/Neil_Peart-Ghost_Rider:_Travels_on_the_Healing_Road-review.html Neil Peart, talented drummer and lyricist for the Canadian rock band Rush, and his wife lost their 18 year old daughter in an auto accident in 1997. Almost a year to the day later, Neil lost his wife to cancer... The Masked Rider: Cycling in West Africa - Neil Peart http://eclecticreviews.com/Neil_Peart-The_Masked_Rider:_Cycling_in_West_Africa-review.html The first travel journal by Neil Peart, famed drummer and lyricist for the legendary Canadian rock trio Rush. Masked Rider details Pearts adventurous and enlightening journey through west Africa, on a bicycle... Traveling Music: Soundtrack to my Life and Times - Neil Peart http://eclecticreviews.com/Neil_Peart-Traveling_Music:_Soundtrack_to_my_Life_and_Times-review.html While each of Neil Peart's other books shed light on some personal aspects of his life which fans will find intruiging, his most recent "Traveling Music," turns out to be more autobiographical in the sense that the reader actually learns more about Neil through flash backs to his childhood, his early band days (including those early years with Rush), and his recent past, all the while enjoying a fun trip around the southwest United States in his BMW Z-8 listening to music that jogs those memories...
